Delhi defeats Generals 13-7

Herkimer, NY – The game was tied 2-2 midway through the first quarter, but the Delhi Broncos used their speed and skill to pull away and earn a 13-7 win over the Generals in sub-freezing conditions on Wednesday night.

A lot of good lacrosse was on display at Wehrum Stadium. The Generals kept things close against the team that's ranked #8 nationally until well into the third quarter. Both sides played with intensity and smart passing.

The contest had just begun when the visitors drew first blood, scoring when the clock had ticked off only 15 seconds. Two minutes later they made it 2-0. Then the Generals' offense found success.

Berek Martichuski took a pass from Joe Lopopolo and scored from the left side. General Davey Mitchell followed suit with a hard shot from 12 yards out, and the game was tied at 2-2 after six minutes of play. Delhi, however, scored two more goals in the first quarter. They led 4-2, and they continued to lead for the rest of the night.

Jace Sowden grabbed a rebound and fired home a goal four minutes before halftime. That closed the score to 7-3, but the visitors tacked on one more before the break.

Sowden also opened the third-quarter scoring. Mitchell sent a nice 20-yard pass to the tall attacker who scored from in close. Herkimer trailed by only four goals, but the Broncos had more offense and enough solid defense to carry them through the game. The home side got another goal from Martichuski and two from Nicholas Suits, but Delhi matched those tallies and won 13-7.

The Generals now have a season mark of 3-3. They have two home games on the schedule for this weekend, hosting SUNY Jefferson at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and Union County College at 2:00 on Sunday afternoon.
