Multiple goal effort by Guerra and Brown help Generals’ advance to semifinal

(Ben Polk got Herkimer on the board in the second minute on an assist from Jermaine Windster).

(Ocasio Brown makes it 4-1 in the 74th on an assist by Moulid Somow. Brown scored two goals Thursday).

HERKIMER, NY – With three goals in each half against Union County College in an NJCAA DIII National Quarterfinal game on Thursday (11/13) at Wehrum Stadium, the Herkimer Generals men’s soccer team advanced to the semifinals, defeating the Owls 6-1.

Herkimer (17-0-1, 7-0) controlled the momentum early, scoring the first goal of the game in the second minute when Jermaine Windster (Rotterdam, Holland) found Ben Polk (Banbury, UK) open on the weak side of the field, going right-to-left for the goal. It was Polk’s 32nd goal and Windster’s 14th assist of the season.

Keeping the pressure on, Herkimer made it 2-0 in the seventh when Shane Jenkinson (Dublin, Ireland) found Rodrigo Guerra (Newburgh, NY) behind the defense, just outside the 18. Guerra bodied the pass to his right foot, scoring to the left of Arturo Botero who finished the game with 10 saves.

The Generals managed to make it a three-goal advantage before intermission, scoring in the 43rd on a give-and-go between Femi Faffo (London, England) and Guerra. The freshman midfielder scored his eighth goal of the season, scoring six goals in his last five games for the Generals.

In the second half Union cut the deficit to two goals when Patrick Reid scored in the 68th, giving life to the Owls for six minutes until freshman Ocasio Brown (Bridgeport, CT) made it 4-1 in the 74th on an assist from Somow. Brown collected his first multi-goal performance of the season just 44 second later when Kaffo found the forward for his fifth goal of the season, helping Kaffo to his second assist of the game.

Sophomore MacIntyre Felton (Vestal, NY) scored the last goal of the game in the 79th, making it 6-1 on an assist from Daniel Riley (Woodford Green, Essex). Felton headed a cross from the outside the 18 for his 12th goal of the season.

In the net for Herkimer was Austin Santor (Chazy, NY). The sophomore allowed one goal in 77 minutes, breaking a streak of four consecutive shutouts, saving five shots. His counterpart Botero for Union allowed six goals in 80 minutes.

Up next for the Generals tomorrow (11/14) is Suffolk County Community College. Herkimer defeated the Sharks 1-0 last year in the 2013 National Championship game. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Wehrum Stadium.
