Felton and McAvoy lead Generals past Hornets

(Peter McAvoy gives Herkimer the 2-0 lead in the first half against the Hornets).

HERKIMER, NY – Improving on their two goal performance against Hudson Valley earlier in the week, the Herkimer Men's Soccer team scored four goals Saturday to beat Broome Community College 4-0.

Scoring quickly for Herkimer (8-1) in the third minute was Peter McAvoy (Dundee, Scotland). McAvoy found the net on a corner kick from teammate James Wilson (Woodford Green, England). It was Wilson's fifth assist this season.

Almost adding to the 1-0 lead in the 22nd was Jermaine Windster (Rotterdam, Holland). Windster had the ball just outside the 18, trying to score from the left to the right. Two minutes later, Windster again found himself deep in his opponent's territory, this time getting fouled by the Hornets, which led to a penalty kick.

Attempting the penalty kick in the 24th minute was McAvoy. McAvoy barried the shot to the right of the goalie, giving Herkimer the 2-0 lead and McAvoy his second goal of the half (his seventh of the season).

The Generals scored three minutes into the second half, just like the first, when Brian Coyt (Port Chester, NY) found MacIntyre Felton (Vestal, NY)  for the 3-0 lead. Coyt found Felton at point-blank range for his second assist and Feltons' second goal of the season.

Ending the scoring in the 70th minute was the Ritchie Hetherington (Fallark, Scotland) and Jimmy Calderon (New Rochelle, NY) connection. Calderon placed a ball perfectly near the net for the header, his fourth assist this season.

Splitting time for Herkimer in the net was Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ont.) and Austin Santor (Chazy, NY). Henry earned his sixth shutout of the season, saving two shots in 80 minutes. As for Santor, he saved four in 10 minutes.

Herkimer, stilled ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA D III, has a two-game win streak after beating the Hornets. To increase it to three, the Generals will have to beat rival Mohawk Valley Community College this Wednesday at Wehrum Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
