Defense clicking at the right time
DELHI, NY – Amassing their eighth shutout this season, this time against the SUNY Delhi Broncos, the Generals won 2-0 with goals in each half to increase the win streak to four.
Scoring goals early in games has become a trend for Herkimer (10-1) in its last three games. Typically sophomore defender Peter McAvoy (Dundee, Scotland) heads that effort, but on Saturday afternoon it was sophomore midfielder Brian Coyt (Port Chester, NY). Coyt, who has come on as of late for the Generals, tallied his first goal of the season 55 seconds in from teammate Jimmy Calderon (New Rochelle, NY) for the 1-0 lead.
With Ailton DoRosario (Ansonia, CT), McAvoy, Jacob Butler-Bowdon (Adelaide, South Australia), Matthew Clinton (Manchester, England), Daniel Galley (Braintree, England) Mitchel White (Leicestershire, UK) and Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ont.) heading the effort on the defensive end, it was safe to assume the goal by Coyt could prove to be the game-winner, considering the defense has allowed three goals this season.
For insurance, in the 87th minute, McAvoy scored his ninth goal of the season unassisted, giving him goals in the team's last four games.
Just as impressive on the field has been Herkimer goalie Henry, who was named National Player of the Week on Wednesday (10/9). Collecting three saves in 90 minutes against the Broncos gave Henry his eighth shutout of the season.
The Generals' last two home games of the regular season are this coming week on Tuesday (10/15) and Saturday (10/19). They'll host both Jefferson and Genesee Community College. With wins against both teams, Herkimer could end their season on a six-game win streak. Tuesday's game starts at 7 p.m. while Saturday's game starts at 1 p.m.
