Felton scores twice and Clinton assists in win
(MacIntyre Felton scored two goals, both assisted from Matthew Clinton on Saturday).
HERKIMER, NY – Scoring another four goals in a game, this time against Genesee Community College, the men's soccer team shutout their sixth consecutive opponent, this time at Wehrum Stadium 4-0.
The Generals (12-1; 4-0 MVC) played their final regular season game like a fighter. They wore the opponent down. Tallying 12 shots and six corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, Herkimer led at half 1-0. Scoring the goal was sophomore midfielder James Wilson (Woodford Green, England). He received a pass in the center of the 18 from MacIntyre Felton (Vestal, NY) and put it past the Cougars goalie Sean Allen.
In the second half, the Generals' killer instinct came out. The team scored three goals; a header, a shot and a penalty kick. Each a distinctive blow to their opponent.
The first goal was scored on the Generals seventh corner kick of the game, first of the second half in the 46th minute. Wilson placed a ball from the corner which was headed by sophomore defender Matthew Clinton (Manchester, England) on the left side of the net, to the right side where Felton nailed with a header to the top-right of the goal, giving the Generals a 2-0 lead.
The Felton Clinton connection again reappeared in the 62nd minute, this time on a free kick. After seeing the ball ricochet off the Cougar goalie from an initial shot by Clinton, Felton put it away to the right side (3-0), giving him his second goal or the game and Clinton his second assist.
Chippy play by Genesee ensued in the final minutes of the game, earning the team two yellow cards. The second yellow gave Herkimer a penalty kick in the 72nd minute which was taken by defensive captain Peter McAvoy (Dundee, Scotland). McAvoy, who just had a four-game goal streak broken against Jefferson Community College, started another with a strong kick to the left of the net, increasing the lead to 4-0.
In the net again was Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ont.) for Herkimer. Henry earned his 10th shutout of the season by saving nine shots. Also playing in the net was Austin Santor (Chazy, NY). Santor collected two saves in limited minutes.
The Generals, currently ranked #1 in the NJCAA, will find out this coming Wednesday who they'll play in the Region III playoffs. It will be a home game on Saturday (10/26).
