Alexandra DeBeatham named Herkimer College Female Athlete of the Year
Herkimer, NY - Herkimer College Athletic Director Donald Dutcher has announced that Alexandra DeBeatham (Menands, NY) has been named the 2019-2020 Herkimer College Female Athlete of the Year. DeBeatham, a sophomore and the women’s basketball team co-captain, was named First Team All-Conference and Second-Team All-Region. She averaged 14.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest. She also led the generals with 42 3-pointers while shooting 40 percent from behind the arc.
DeBeatham also led Herkimer by shooting 72 percent from the free throw line. She was named Region III female athlete of the week for January 27th - February 2nd. DeBeatham helped bring the program to new heights during her two years at Herkimer College, including a 19-6 season record, bringing Herkimer women’s basketball consistently to the top 10 in national rankings for NJCAA Division 3 member institutions, and a trip to the Regional Final Four.
Coach Gabe Coffey states "When asked what the key was to becoming a great player Magic Johnson once said, “Ask not what your teammates can do for you; ask what you can do for your teammates.” Lexi has had many great moments here, but her greatest attribute was her selflessness and how she put her team and teammates first. These are the chief qualities of successful leaders, and Lexi is one of the best.
Coffey continued on by saying "During a freshman season, faced with much adversity, her effort never wavered. She remained loyal to the program and committed to lead the resurgence that we witnessed this year as one of the best seasons for women’s basketball in the last 20 years. It was an honor and privilege to coach her for two years and watch her tremendous growth here at Herkimer College. We are so proud of her!"
This past week the Kiwanis Club of Utica honored Lexi, along with Herkimer Male Athlete of the Year Tyler Dobinson and other locak college athletes. The link to the story in the Utica Observer Dispatch is below
