Great finish yields win for Generals

Herkimer, NY – The new-look Generals have played two games in this young season and they've won them both with gutsy, come-from-behind efforts. On Tuesday evening the Generals used a terrific end game to defeat the Ithaca College Junior Varsity 50-47.

Ithaca had led all evening until stalwart Whitney Brown gave Herkimer a 44-43 lead. From that point on, the already-tense game became a nail biter.

Last season Allie Webb sank some impressive and timely three-pointers. On Tuesday against Ithaca she drained a huge one, giving Herkimer a 47-43 lead with 34 seconds to play.

Ithaca then made a free throw, but the Generals' freshman center Victoria Seabrooks also stepped to the charity stripe and sank two FTs, making it 49-44 Herkimer. There were 23 seconds left on the clock.

Seabrooks fouled out. Ithaca scored three points. Herkimer led by two. Then freshman Samantha Randio went to the line and made the score 50-47.

Herkimer had the lead, but Ithaca had the ball. The visitors threatened, but the Generals' defense held. The Green & Gold had their second consecutive three-point win.

Head Coach Brad Gouger was pleased with the win and stated, "The defensive effort in the last seven minutes changed the whole dynamic of the game. We were struggling to score but were able to turn up the defensive pressure and it turned into easier offense. One of our goals is to be in the top five in the region in points allowed. Our bench gave us a big spark with Alexia Brown, Shi Williams, and Alyssa Craig contributing solid minutes when foul trouble was an issue."

The 2-0 Generals will get another good test on Thursday. Both the women's and men's teams will travel to Watertown to take on the Cannoneers of Jefferson Community College. The women's game begins at 6:00 p.m. and the men's game will follow at 8:00.

The Generals will return to the Herkimer hardwood on Saturday, when they will host the U. of Connecticut at Avery Point. That game will tip off at 2:00 p.m.
