wbball 02 01 2013 WebbHerkimer, NY – Two teams played hard for 40 minutes on Thursday evening. The visiting Lazers of Onondaga CC ("OCC"), currently ranked #2 in the regional coaches' poll, earned a 77-65 victory.

OCC built a 22-point lead in the first half. The Generals fought back and trimmed that lead to nine, but the taller Lazers prevailed. Basketball fans had to appreciate the visitors' execution and depth.

The visitors jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Senior guard Aniya Webb sank a three to get Herkimer on the board. Freshman guard Samantha Randio stole the ball and sped in for two. The Generals trailed 8-6, but the visitors then went on a 17-2 scoring run.

Lazer Kayle Kibling lit up the scoreboard with five three-pointers in the first half. And Kibling was just one part of a talented team of Central New York players.

Shi Williams opened the second stanza scoring with an almost coast-to-coast run. Whitney Brown sank a free throw. Williams drove for two more, and the Generals were getting back into the game.

Sam Randio took a pass from Brown and scored. Victoria Seabrooks put in a two.

Williams tallied a three from the right corner; then she stole the ball and fed Webb who also hit for three. Nine minutes into the half, Alyssa Craig sank one of her five three-pointers, and the score was 57-48. The Generals had reduced the Lazer lead from 22 points to nine.

The Lazers, however, would not be denied. Their speed and hustle matched that of the Generals, and their offense was clicking. The scoring ended with Herkimer's Craig sinking two FT's. The final score was 77-65.

OCC and Mohawk Valley have established themselves as the top two teams in Region 3 at this point of the season. The weekly coaches' poll has Fulton-Montgomery ranked third and the Generals fourth in the 16-team region. The Herkimer Five's record is now 15-6.

The Generals take to the road on Saturday to meet the Spartans of Cayuga CC on their campus in Auburn. Herkimer's next home game will be on Thursday, February 7 when they host the Fulton-Montgomery Raiders in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
