Clinton ends Generals’ great season

Utica, NY – The Cougars of Clinton CC outplayed the Lady Generals in the second half of their Friday evening Region 3 quarterfinal game. The Cougars, seeded #6 in the playoffs, upset the #3-seeded Generals 54-42.

The loss eliminated HCCC from the playoffs. Their season ends with a sterling 22-8 record.

Both teams played tight defense throughout the first half. The Cougars scored first, with a three-pointer, but Victoria Seabrooks sank two free throws to get the Generals on the board.

The blue-clad Cougars were shooting well and took an 11-6 lead, but the Generals came back. Whitney Brown scored a field goal, Shi Williams sank a three, Seabrooks hit a two, and the score was 11-11.

The Generals were working hard and were rebounding well in their defensive end, but they were not scoring as well as usual. The two teams played an even first half. The score was 21-19 Herkimer at the break.

The Herkimer Five have played many strong second halves this season, but they just could not get their offense up to its norm against Clinton. The Cougars went ahead, but Williams tied the game at 24-24 with a nice three from the right side. Clinton sank a three, but so did Alyssa Craig. 27-27. Williams hit for three more, and the Generals led 30-27 with 15 minutes to play. Clinton, however, grabbed the lead at 31-30, and the Generals were unable to catch up.

A Seabrooks rebound and two-pointer got the score close, at 40-37, with six minutes left, but that was as close as the Generals would get.

Samantha Randio scored two, and then sank a free throw after being accidentally slammed to the floor. She scored two more on a nice drive through the lane, but Clinton still led by seven. The Generals worked and ran to the very end, but the taller Cougars prevailed 54-42.

The game ended an excellent season for the Lady Generals. They played 30 games and won 22, typically by playing strong second halves and end games. They worked as hard and ran as fast as any team in the region. They gave their fans and themselves a season to remember.
