Ryan Brooks-Newton Appointed as Head Women’s Soccer Coach

HERKIMER, NY – Herkimer College has appointed Ryan Brooks-Newton (Selkirk, NY) as head coach for the women’s soccer team for the fall 2014 season.

Brooks-Newton’s coaching experience spans Division I, II and III level competition. A former player and assistant coach for the Herkimer Generals men’s soccer team, Brooks-Newton has accumulated three NJCAA Division III National Championships. One was as a goalie in 2005 where he only allowed six goals the entire season. The other two were in 2008 and 2011 as a goalkeeper coach for the Generals.

As a goalkeeper for the Generals, in two seasons (2005-2007), Brooks-Newton compiled 32 shutouts, which was second all-time in the NJCAA, and a 41-3-1 record. This earned him 1st Team NSCAA, 1st Team Mountain Valley Conference, 2nd Team All-Region and three Player of the Week nominations.

After Herkimer, Brooks-Newton went to American International College in Springfield, MA where he was a goalkeeper for the Yellow Jackets. With one year of eligibility left in 2010, Brooks-Newton also played football for the Yellow Jackets, starring as their kicker.

Brooks-Newton’s professional career launched in 2011 when he played for the Syracuse Knights Indoor Soccer Team of the Major Indoor Soccer League, again as a goalkeeper. Thereafter, a three-year stint with the Vermont Voltage of the Professional Development League led to his most recent position with Syracuse University in 2013, where he was director of soccer operations.

Brooks-Newton said, “I’m humbled yet excited to be back at Herkimer College. I have many memorable moments as a player and coach here, so I’m excited at the opportunity to build on an already strong women’s soccer program. The college and I both take pride in what we do, building athletes’ abilities both on and off the field.”

Athletic Director Donald Dutcher said, “I’m excited at giving Ryan the opportunity to be a part of our coaching staff. His knowledge of the game of soccer, as both a player and coach at many different levels, will benefit our student-athletes experiences at Herkimer College.”

The women’s soccer team begins play in late August 2014.
