Hat Trick by Ward Enough Against Lazers

(Teigha Ward scored her third goal of the game in overtime on an assist from Danielle Nicosia, defeating the Lazers 3-2).

(Sydney Stanley had 10 saves against Onondaga Thursday in 92 minutes).

HERKIMER, NY – In a battle between two ranked team, the Herkimer Generals women’s soccer team came out on top, defeating Onondaga Community College 3-2 in overtime on a hat trick by freshman Teigha Ward (Ilion, NY).

Herkimer (2-0, 0-0) came out strong offensively within the first 22 minutes of play, getting numerous quality shots like they did against Holyoke in the opener. Unable to connect on any of them, the Lazers took advantage in the 25th, scoring on a corner to make it 1-0.

Just three minutes later, Ward scored her first goal of the game to tie it at one all (1-1). Onondaga played too far up on the Generals during a goal kick, resulting in an assist from Zaira Pabon (Liberty, NY) near midfield, touching it perfectly to Ward for the one-on-one goal.

The Lazers again answered in the 41st minute, giving them the 2-1 lead with just a couple minutes before intermission. Ward answered with her second goal on another assist from Pabon ironically after three more minutes of play, eliminating the deficit into intermission.

The second half saw both Herkimer and Onondaga get opportunities to capture a lead. Nicole Doolen (Ilion, NY) and Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY) stopped fast break opportunities single handedly in the 54th and 55th, keeping it locked at 2-2. Sophomore Kalli Warmingham (Newport, NY) got in the act as well on defense in the 80th, stopping another break away which lead to another failed corner kick.

Danielle Nicosia (Oneonta, NY) and Warmingham had opportunities on free kicks in the 85th and 86th, but came away with nothing, resulting in extra play.

It only took two minutes however to end it, when Ward scored her third goal of the game on an assist from Nicosia in the 92nd. Ward was given another one-on-one situation with an Onondaga defender and capitalized for the game winner.

In the net for Herkimer was Stanley. In 92 minutes the freshman had a season-high 10 saves, helping her too 2-0 on the season.

The Generals will have their first away game of the season on Saturday (9/6). Jamestown Community College will host Herkimer at 1 p.m. The Jayhawks are coming off a 4-0 win over Clinton Community College.
