Women’s Soccer comes through in Hornet country

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Herkimer Generals women’s soccer team came out on top to end their hardest week of the regular season Saturday (10/4), defeating Broome Community College 1-0 on their home field.

Herkimer (8-1, 4-0) began the week facing their third nationally ranked opponent to date Hudson Valley, defeating the Vikings 2-1 at Wehrum Stadium. Herkimer had proven till Saturday that they could win tough games at home, but with sophomore Teigha Ward (Ilion, NY) netting the only goal of the game in the 71st minute, the team also proved they could prevail against opponents on the road.

Ward’s goal was her 16th of the season, on an assist from midfielder Danielle Nicosia (Oneonta, NY). It was the fifth time this season the two have connected, and the fourth consecutive time in the last three games Herkimer has used that connection to defeat opponents.

The defense for the Generals also came out to play for a full 90 minutes, led by freshman goalie Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY). Stanley was the first goalie all season to hold the Hornets to no goals, tying her season-high against DIII competition, saving 10 shots. It was also her third shutout of the season against the second highest scoring team in the Region III.

The Generals get right back at it on Wednesday, October 8th. They travel to Utica, NY to take on the nationally ranked Hawks, currently ranked seventh in the nation. Mohawk Valley has the third most goals in the region in 12 games. The Generals will look to get another tough win on the road and another notch on their belt, earning their way up the national poll each week currently ranked fifth. Game time between both Mountain Valley Conference rivals is scheduled for 4 p.m.
