Four goals by Ward leads to conference championship

HERKIMER, NY – Scoring five goals in a game for the third time this season, led by Teigha Ward’s four goals, the Herkimer Generals women’s soccer team clinched the Mountain Valley Conference Saturday (10/11) afternoon, defeating SUNY Delhi at home 5-1.

Herkimer (10-1, 6-1) netted more goals in their last regular season home game than they had in October after facing three regional power houses in Hudson Valley, Broome and Mohawk Valley. Capitalizing on those opportunities like she has all season was Ward (Ilion, NY). After Abigail Rohskothen (Walnut, CA) scored her first goal of the season in the 8th minute on an assist from Ward, the freshman got her third hat trick of the season by the end of the first half on assists from Lillie Williams (Herkimer, NY) and Danielle Nicosia (Oneonta, NY), making it 4-1 at intermission. Ward is now third in the nation in goals with 21.

Williams got her third assist of the season in the 71st to give Herkimer a 5-1 lead, scoring two unanswered goals after Delhi’s Maria Panzini made it 3-1 in the 33rd.

In the net for Herkimer against their conference opponent was Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY). After two straight shutouts, the freshman allowed one goal, not recording a save in 90 minute of play for her ninth win of the season which is in the Top 10 amongst goalies in the nation.

The Generals next game is against Jefferson Community College on Wednesday, October 15th. The Cannoneers just defeated national ranked Mohawk Valley on their home field and boast a 7-3-1 record. With game time scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Herkimer will look to add to a current six-game win streak.
