Two goals enough for Region III ‘A’ Championship

(Nicole Doolen comes inches away from her second goal against Hudson Valley on Saturday, finishing with 1 goal and 1 assist).

(Lillie Williams comes close to giving Herkimer a three goal advantage in the second half of the Region III Championship game).

DRYDEN, NY – With a goal from Region III Tournament MVP Danielle Nicosia and Nicole Doolen in the first half of Saturday’s Region III District ‘A’ Championship game, the Herkimer Generals women’s soccer team defeated conference foe Hudson Valley 2-0 at Tompkins-Cortland Community College for the team’s first Region III Championship in nine years.

Herkimer (13-2, 7-0) had confidence going into the game already defeating the Vikings in their first game of October when the team was nationally ranked. That day it took two goals for the win, and the Generals did just that in the first half from both Nicosia (Oneonta, NY) and Doolen (Ilion, NY). Nicosia scored in the 7th on an assist from Doolen for her 12th goal of the season, coming on as of late with three goals in her last two games.

Doolen scored her third goal of the season on an assist from freshman Teigha Ward (Ilion, NY) in the 26th, capitalizing in the open field after getting behind the Vikings defense, scoring from left-to-right and ending a 10-game scoreless streak in the process. The assist for Ward was her sixth of the season.

The Generals kept the strong performance throughout the contest, never getting caught out of position in the final 64 minutes to give Hudson Valley a chance to come back. Herkimer did have a chance to go up three goals in the 62nd on a penalty kick, but Vikings’ goalie Emily Taplin made an excellent save to the right, anticipating the shot to that side to keep the score locked at 2-0.

Freshman goalie Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY) was also up for the challenge in the final 30 minutes, heard directing her teammates throughout, earning her seventh shutout of the season and second consecutive, saving four shots in 90 minutes.

Earning spots on the All-Tournament team Saturday for Herkimer was Zaira Pabon (Liberty, NY) and Ward. Pabon has started every game for the Generals this season, helping the defense only allow 1.6 goals per game. As for Ward, the forward accumulated one goal and three assists in two regional games for the Generals totaling 23 goals and six assists so far this season.

With the win, Herkimer advances to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament which is being hosted by Ocean County Community College from November 13th – 16th. The Generals will face Genesee Thursday, November 13th with game time scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Cougars are the only DIII team this season to hand Herkimer a loss.
