Lady Generals riding high to Region III Playoff

(Emily Rexford scored the first goal of the game in the 18th minute).

(Danielle Nicosia had one goal and one assist against the Cannoneers).

HERKIMER, NY – Scoring the most goals in a game since facing Niagara, totaling five, the Lady Generals ended the regular season positively, beating Jefferson Community College 5-1 Wednesday night under the lights at Wehrum Stadium.

Herkimer (8-5-1) had a rough past two weeks after accumulating five consecutive wins during the middle portion of the season. Offensive struggles (two goals in four games) was the direct cause.

Wednesday night, the teams' first home game under the lights, showed a different offense. Herkimer managed to score four goals in the first half, all from different players.

Starting it off was Emily Rexford (Canton, NY). In the 18th minute, Rexford played a cross to the center of the field from teammate Julia Jaikin (Dolgeville, NY) aggressively, actually knocking the ball out of Cannoneers goalie Kate Gehrke's hands and into the net for the 1-0 lead.

Following up with another aggressive play was midfielder Danielle Nicosia (Odenton, NY). After Rexford led Nicosia to the outside of the goalie box on a give-and-go in the 31st minute, Nicosia blasted the ball from left-to-right for the 2-0 lead.

Giving the Lady Generals a four-goal advantage in the matter of 54 seconds was sophomore's Jessica Williamson (Mexico, NY) and Kaitlyn Lyon (Dolgeville, NY). Williamson found the net on an assist from Lyon, while Lyon scored on an assist from Nicosia.

Scoring the lone goal in the second half for Herkimer was Rexford, who accumulated two goals and one assist on the evening. In the 55th minute Rexford placed a shot from inside the 18 right over the outstretched arms of Gehrke, increasing the lead to 5-0.

Ending the goal streak for Jefferson was Whitney Meitland. Meitland scored in the 79th, the final goal for either side (5-1).

Playing the entire game at goalie for Herkimer was sophomore Kristi Bills (Northville, NY). In 90 minutes Bills saved one shot, helping her collect an eighth win.

The Lady Generals next game is Saturday (10/19). They will travel to Onondaga Community College and take on the Lazers in a Region III match-up. Onondaga gave Herkimer their first loss of the season (1-0) at home back in September. The Lady Generals, a different team since then, will give them everything they have at 12 p.m.
