Herkimer Softball wins Region IIIA Championship
Batavia, NY - The Herkimer Generals women's softball team won the Region IIIA Championship with a hard fought sweep of Onondaga Community College in the best of three series on Friday afternoon at Genesee Community College. The Generals advanced to the NJCAA Division III Championships in Rochester for the seventh consecutive season with scores of 4-3 in Game 1 and 3-1 in Game 2.
In Game 1, the Generals jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead before the Lazers came back to tie it at 3-3 in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Jennah Hogan (East Greenwich, NY) knocked in Taylor Zaino (Newport, NY) with the eventual winning run. Kali Puppolo (Adams, MA) closed the door in the top of the seventh to give the Generals the win. Puppolo had 18 strikeouts in the game.
Game 2 was another low scoring battle as again Hogan was the hero with her bases loaded single in the top of the third that gave Herkimer a lead they would not relinquish. Keeanna Woicik (Baldwinsville, NY) had a strong performance in the circle to get the win for the Generals.
Hogan was named MVP of the regional tournament with Zaino and Woicik earning spots on the all tourney team.
The Generals will await their seeding and first opponent for the NJCAA National Championships which begin in Rochester, Minnesota on Thursday, May 17.
