Generals go 5-0 at Onondaga CC Tournament

Syracuse, NY - The Herkimer Generals softball team opened the New York portion of their schedule with 5 games over the weekend at the Onondaga Community College Tournament in Syracuse, NY. Below are summaries of the Generals 5-0 weekend. 


Friday, March 29th

Generals take a 8-5 victory over Mercyhurst Northeast


The Generals got their offense going early with back to back base hits by Taylor Zaino and Mackenzie Keeler.  Zaino then scored on a dropped third strike to Julianna Finnerty and Keeler scored on a double by Jennah Hogan.


The Generals scored four more in the top of the second.  Victoria De La Cruz lead off the inning with a single and was followed by Kali Puppolo who reached on an error and Taylor Zaino who singled to load the bases.  De Laz Cruz scored on a past ball and Puppolo scored on an error by Mercyhurst fielding a ball hit my Keeler.  Zaino was then scored on a successfully steal attempt of home and Keeler scored on a double by Hogan.


Kali Puppolo was the winning pitcher for the Generals pitching 5 innings and allowing 5 runs on 8 hits.  Ciel Lida closed out the game in the circle to earn a save. 


Saturday, March 30th

Keeler's 9th inning walk-off secures a 10-9 win over Mercyhurst Northeast


The Generals were able to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th after a leadoff single by Jennah Hogan.  Aubrey Ketcham was inserted as a pinch runner for Hogan and advanced to second on a Mercyhurst wild pitch.  Ketcham then scored on a single by Vani Patel.


After Mercyhurst was able to score a run in the top of the 8th, The Generals started the inning with Jessica Johnstn on 2nd.  Johnston was advanced to 3rd on a bunt by Victoria De La Cruz and later scored on a single by Taylor Zaino to tie the game.   With runners on 3rd and 2nd, Mackenzie Keeler then drove in the winning run on a single to center.


Taylor Betz started the game for the Generals and battled through 5 innings, seeing seven runs scored on 3 Generals defensive errors.  Betz struck out out 5 Mercyhurst batters while walking 1.  Ciel Lida closed out the game for Herkimer pitching 3 innings, allowing no hits and striking out 2 for the win.  


Johnston's Pitching shuts out Orange Community College 10-0


Jessica Johnston threw five strong innings resulting in a 2 hit shutout of Orange Community College to close out the day for the Generals.  Johnston recorded 5 strikeouts and no walks in the game.


The Generals scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first and 4 more in the second.  The offense was paced by Vani Patel, Jennah Hogan, Taylor Zaino and Jessica Johnston who all recorded multiple hits in the game.  Patel lead the way with back to back homeruns in the 2nd and 4th innings.


Sunday, March 31st

Generals score 7 in the bottom of the 5th to secure a 11-3 win over Mercyhurst Northeast


The Generals took an early lead on a homerun by Vani Patel in the bottom of the first which held up until the top of the 4th when Mercyhurst was able to score 3 to take the lead.  The Mercyhurst lead held until the bottom of the 5th when the Generals offense plated 7 runs on hits by Johnston, Hoskins (2B), Hogan (2B), Holt (3B), Finnerty and Johnston (3B). 


Jessica Johnston earned the complete game victory for the Generals, pitching 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits.



Generals score 12 in the third, Beat Orange Community College 15-1


Taylor Betz made sure 3 first inning runs were all the offense required, allowing just 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 7 in a 5 inning complete game win.


The Generals offense racked up 15 hits in the game.  Jessica Johnston, Victoria De La Cruz, Julianna Finnerty, Jennah Hogan, Taylor Zaino and Mackenzie Keeler all had multiple hit games with Johnston leading the Generals with 3 hits.
