Generals outscore TC-3 and Niagara 62-0 in 4 game weekend sweep
Dryden and Herkimer, NY - It was an impressive weekend for the Herkimer Generals softball team, to say the least.
The Generals outscored Tompkins-Cortland CC and Niagara CCC by a total score of 62-0 in securing a 4 game sweep of their weekend games. The dominant performances by Herkimer gives them 15 wins in a row and raises their overall record to 23-5 for the 2019 campaign.
On Saturday, the Generals traveled to Dryden, NY to take on the Panthers. In the 27-0 Game 1 win, 6 different Generals had at least 3 hits on the day. The offensive effort was led by Taylor Zaino (Newport, NY), who went 4-4 from her leadoff spot in the order. Jennah Hogan (East Greenbush, NY) also went 4-4 which included a home run. MaKenzie Keeler (Jamesville, NY), Brooke Snyder (Suntee, CA), Vani Patel (Eastvale, CA), and Brianna Hoskins (Washington Township, NJ) all went 3-4 in the Game 1 win, with one of Patel's hits being a home run. Hunter VanArnum (Schuylerville, NY) got the win on the bump, going 3 innings while only giving up one hit and striking out 5. VanArnum also added a home run at the plate as well. Ciel Iida (Tokyo, Japan) pitched 2 innings and gave up only 2 hits.
Game 2 was more of the same for the Generals has 5 players got 2 or more hits in the 16-0 victory. VanArnum hit her second home run on the day while going 2 for 3 at the dish. Victoria De La Cruz (Whittier, CA) went 3-3 with 3 runs batted in while Alyssa Ramirez (Bay City, TX), Mariah Galleta (Oswego, NY) and Kelsey Denton (Fultonville, NY) each pitched in with 2 hits apiece. 5 different pitchers took the mound for the Generals during the course of the 5 inning game, with Kali Puppolo (Adams, MA) getting the start and striking out 2 in her one inning of work.
The Generals then returned home on Sunday morning and hosted Niagara CCC, winning Game 1 by a score of 10-0 and completing the weekend sweep by getting a 9-0 win in Game 2. Puppolo (Adams, MA) got the start for the Generals once again and went the distance, surrendering just 2 hits in 5 innings of work while striking out 10 and walking just 1. Snyder went 3-3 with 3 RBI's while Hogan continued her torrid pace, going 2-2 with 2 RBI's. Keeler knocked in 3 runs with a 2-3 performance at the plate and Jessica Johnston (Brussels, Ontario) went 2-3 as well. Herkimer used a 5 run second inning and then used a 5 run 4th frame to put the game out of reach.
Maria DiNigro (Frankfort, NY) was the Game 2 hitting star, going 2-3 for hitting the Generals only home run on the afternoon. Hogan once again was perfect at the plate, going 2-2 and Galletta was the other General with 2 hits in the Game 2 win. Taylor Betz (Cheektowaga, NY) allowed only 1 hit over 5 innings while striking out 8.
Herkimer gets a well deserved break in the schedule before hosting their rivals from Onondaga Community College on Thursday afternoon April 18. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
