Herkimer offense rises to occasion late to sweep rival Mohawk Valley
Herkimer, NY - A dominant pitching performance in Game 1 by Kali Puppolo (Adams, MA) and a late offensive explosion in Game 2 helped the Herkimer Generals sweep a Mountain Valley Conference twinbill vs their rivals from Mohawk Valley on Tuesday afternoon in Herkimer. The two wins, 3-0 in Game 1 and 11-4 in 8 innings in Game 2, raises Herkimer's record to 26-6 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
Puppolo was the story in Game 1 for the Generals, going the distance and allowing only one hit and striking out 12 in 7 innings of work. Jennah Hogan (East Greenbush, NY) provided the big offensive spark, connecting on a 2 run homer in the first inning that would give the Generals all of the runs they would need to back Puppolo. Herkimer did add an unearned run in the 6th for the final margin of 3-0.
In Game 2, the Generals survived a late Hawk rally that tied the game at 4-4 to send it to extra before responding with 7 runs in the top of the 8th, capped off by a another Hogan home run, to earn the 11-4 win and get the sweep. Jessica Johnston (Brussels, Ontario) was the star on offense for the Generals, going 4-5 with 2 home runs while scoring 4 runs and driving in 3. Brianna Hoskins (Washington Township, NJ) added 2 hits of her own, which included a 7th inning homer and Madysen Petty (Vernal, UT) chipped in with 3 hits as well. Ciel Iida (Tokyo, Japan) got the win on the bump for Herkimer, pitching the last 1 and 2/3 innings and allowing only one hit. Taylor Betz (Cheektowaga, NY) started the game for the Generals and struck out 9 in her 6.1 innings of work.
Next up for Herkimer, the # 3 ranked team in the nation, is a trip to Johnstown, NY to take on the Fulton-Montgomery Raiders on Thursday afternoon, April 25. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
