Generals get 40th win of the season, clinch Mountain Valley Conference title

Canandaigua, NY and Glens Falls, NY - The Herkimer Generals softball team hit the road on Tuesday and Wednesday and came away with 4 wins to improve their record to 40-6 in the 2019 campaign. On Tuesday, Herkimer traveled to Finger Lakes CC and took a pair from the Lakers by scores of 29-1 and 10-1 then went to take on Mountain Valley Conference opponent SUNY Adirondack in Glens Falls on Wednesday and beat the Timberwolves by scores of 15-0 and 9-1. With the Wednesday wins, the Generals clinched the Mountain Valley Conference title and extended their winning streak to 17 in a row. 

On Tuesday, Herkimer exploded for 21 runs in the first inning of Game 1 against Finger Lakes to cruise to the easy win. Vani Patel (Eastvale, CA) had a big game, going 3-3 with 6 RBI's while Natasha Holt (Melbourne, Australia) went 3-4 and knocked in 4. Maria DiNigro (Frankfort, NY) launched a 1st inning HR and while Julianna Finnerty (Pulaski, NY) went 2-3 with 2 RBI's. Jessica Johnston (Brussels, Ontario) got the win on the bump for Herkimer, striking out 7 and allowing only one hit in 3 innings of work. 

In Game 2, Herkimer started the game by scoring 6 in the first inning en route to the 9-1 win. Patel continued her hot hitting, going 2-2 with 3 RBI's while Taylor Zaino (Newport, NY) went tallied 3 hits and 3 runs from the leadoff spot in the General lineup. Hunter VanArnum (Schuylerville, NY) got the complete game win on the mound, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run over 5 innings of work while striking out 9. 

On Wednesday, Herkimer once again took the lead early, this time against SUNY Adirondack. The Generals scored 3 in the first, 4 in the second, and put the game away with 7 runs in the top of the 4th. Jennah Hogan (East Greenbush, NY) went 2-2 with a home run and 4 RBI's and Aubrey Ketchum (Otisville, NY) went 3-3 with a run scored. Makenzie Keeler (Jamesville, NY) added 3 hits and 3 runs scored from her # 2 spot in the lineup. Kali Puppolo (Adams, MA) was overpowering on the mound, getting 12 out of 15 outs via the strikeout and allowing only 1 hit in her 5 innings. 

Keeler was the Game 2 story for the Generals, going 2-2 with a grand slam and 6 RBI's and 2 runs scored to account for 8 out of the 9 Herkimer runs in the win. Holt went 3-3 with 2 RBI's and Zaino, DiNigro, and Mariah Galletta (Oswego, NY) each tallied 2 hits in the win. Taylor Betz (Cheektowaga, NY) went 5 solid innings to get the win, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 6.

Herkimer, ranked # 3 in the latest NJCAA National Poll, will wrap up their regular season with a home doubleheader against Erie CC on Saturday, May 11th at 2:00 PM. This will be the final contest before regional matchups and seedings come out on Sunday night the 12th. The Generals will host a Region III Semifinal on their home field on Tuesday, May 14th. Opponent and time for that game is TBD.
