Herkimer ends regular season with sweep of Erie CC

Clinton, NY -  The Herkimer Generals softball team ended their regular season on Saturday with a twinbill sweep of the Erie Community College Kats at the Hamilton College softball field. The two wins, 7-0 in Game 1 and 8-4 in Game 2, gives the Generals 19 wins in a row and an overall record of 42-6 heading into the Region III Playoffs. The 42 wins in the regular season is a new Herkimer College softball record.

Kali Puppolo (Adams, MA) was dominant on the mound for Herkimer in the Game 1 win. Puppolo went 7 innings while allowing only 3 hits while striking out 14 Erie batters. Vani Patel (Eastvale, CA) led the offensive attack by going 3 for 3 while Aubrey Ketcham (Otisville, NY) also added 3 hits as Herkimer scored in each of the first four innings to get the victory. With the 14 strikeouts, Puppolo reached the  300 mark for the season. 

The Generals had to fight back from a 4-1 deficit in Game 2 to grab the win and secure the sweep of the doubleheader. After Herkimer battled back to tie the game at 4, Victoria De La Cruz (Whittier, CA) broke the tie with a home run to give the Generals a 5-4 lead. Herkimer tacked on 3 more runs in the inning and then held on for the 8-4 win. De La Cruz's home run was part of a 3 hit game and Mariah Galletta (Oswego, NY) also went 3-4 with a run scored. Jessica Johnston (Brussels, Ontario) got the win on the bump, pitching 2 innings in relief of starter Taylor Betz (Cheektowaga, NY). Johnston struck out 4 and only allowed 1 hit in her 2 innings of work and Ciel Iida (Tokyo, Japan) closed the door on the Kats by pitching a scoreless 7th inning and striking out 2. 

The Generals have earned the overall # 1 seed in the Region III Tournament and will host # 8 Monroe Community College on Tuesday afternoon in a Region IIIA Semifinal matchup. The winner advances to the Region III Championships at Corning Community College on Friday, May 17th against the winner of Erie CC and Genesee CC.
