Herkimer wins Region IIIA Championship with sweep of Genesee CC
Corning, NY - For the 8th straight year, the Herkimer Generals are heading to Rochester, Minnesota.
The Generals qualified for the 2019 NJCAA Division III National Championships by winning the Region IIIA title in a 11-2, 12-7 sweep of Genesee Community College in the Region IIIA Championship Series in Corning. Herkimer, the # 3 ranked team in the nation, improves to 45-6 on the season and will take a 22 game winning streak in the the National Championships.
In Game 1, it was a 7 run 4th inning that put the game away for the Generals in the 5 inning victory. Region IIIA Tournament MVP Jennah Hogan (East Greenbush, NY) went 2-2 with 4 RBI's that included a 4th inning home run. Jessica Johnston (Brussels, Ontario) added a solo blast in the 4th frame as well. Brooke Snyder (Santee, CA) and Taylor Zaino (Newport, NY) each tallied 2 hits in the win. Kali Puppolo (Adams, MA) got the win in the circle for the Generals, going the distance and striking out 9 while only allowing 2 hits.
Herkimer had to battle back in Game 2, trailing the Cougars by a score of 4-0 after 3 innings before the bats woke up for 12 runs over the final 4 frames to punch their ticket to Rochester with the 12-7 win. Natasha Holt (Melbourne, Australia) and Vani Patel (Eastvale, CA) each had 3 hits and smashed back to back home runs in the 6th inning. Hogan added her second home run in the 4th inning and Snyder went 3-5 to pace the Generals attack. Ciel Iida (Tokyo, Japan) came on in relief and earned the win on the mound, going 4 innings while only giving up 2 hits.
Along with Hogan's MVP honors for the tournament, Puppolo and Patel were also named to the All-Tournament team for their performances.
The Generals earned the # 2 seed in National Championships and will take on St. Cloud Tech (MN) in the first round on Thursday, May 23 at 1:00 PM EDT (12:00 CDT).
