Herkimer takes down #1 Rock Valley, will play for National Title on Saturday afternoon
Rochester, Minnesota - The Herkimer Generals will play for the National Championship.
In a thrilling game, the #2 Herkimer Generals defeated the #1 ranked and 5 time defending National Champions from Rock Valley College (IL) by a score of 9-6 in a National Semifinal game in Rochester, Minnesota. The win, the 25th in a row for the Generals, lifts their record to 48-6 and places them in the National Championship round at 3:00 on Saturday afternoon. The Generals are one win away from PJ Anadio's 2nd National Title.
The Generals shot out to a 3-0 in the top of the first before the Golden Eagle got 1 in the bottom of the first and 3 in the second frame to take a 4-3 lead. Herkimer bounced back with a 3 run 4th inning to take the lead for good and scored single runs in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings to hold on for the win. Vani Patel (Eastvale, CA) went 3-4 with 3 RBI's and a solo home run in the 6th and the 2 run single in the 4th that broke a 4-4 tie. Jennah Hogan (East Greenbush, NY) added 3 hits in her 4 at bats including an RBI. Kali Puppolo (Adams, MA) went the distance in the circle for the Generals, as she battled through 7 innings and scattered 9 hits while striking out 3.
Herkimer now awaits the winner of the Brookdale-Rock Valley game, which will be played at 1:00 on Saturday, to determine their opponent for the National Championship Round. The winner of that game will need to beat the Generals twice on Saturday to claim the championship, with Herkimer only needing one win to grab the title.
