Seven Generals named to Softball All-Conference Team

HERKIMER, NY – The Herkimer Generals softball team had seven players named to the 2014 Mountain Valley All-Conference Team, adding Ashley Sterritt (Accord, NY) as the conference Player of the Year.

At first base was Delaney Buckley (Utica, NY). The sophomore hit .405 this season with five home runs and 21 RBIs. At third base was Ashley Sterritt (Accord, NY), again who was also named as conference player of the year. The sophomore was second in the nation in RBIs (50) and home runs (11), accumulating all of those stats from the second spot in the lineup. Rounding out the infield was Tina Karaqi (Thornwood, NY) and Sammy Smaldone (Delmar, NY). Karaqi finished the season with five home runs and 35 RBIs. Smaldone, a catcher, was Top 10 in the nation in batting average (.519), on-base percentage (.592) and slugging percentage (1.000). She finished the season with nine home runs and 47 RBIs.

Obtaining the two outfield positions were Rebekah Kitchen (Delmar, NY) and Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, NY). Kitchen had a .361 batting average with four home runs and 16 RBIs while Heimbach had a .537 average with one home run and 25 RBIs. Additionally, Heimbach was second on the team in runs scored from the leadoff position with 41.

Sophomore Toni Secreti (Syracuse, NY) was the only pitcher named on the all-conference team. The ace of the staff accumulated a 15-1 record going into nationals with 17 complete games and a 1.47 ERA. Her 120 total strike outs gave her an average of eight per start.

“While not surprised by the quality of the athletes chosen for the all-conference team, to put in perspective for Herkimer College to take seven of the nine first-team spots is amazing! It’s a testament to their hard work, dedication and commitment to their strength training, nutrition, softball skills and to the game. Every one of these young women deserve everything they have coming to them. I couldn’t be more proud as their coach for not only the players they have become, but also the students, leaders and human beings they’ve become.”
