Generals accumulate seventh consecutive win against Lakers

HERKIMER, NY – Playing their sixth and seventh games in the matter of four days, the Herkimer Generals Softball team continued their solid play Sunday at Harmon Field, defeating Finger Lakes Community College 7-0 and 9-0 in a doubleheader for their seventh consecutive win to date.

Herkimer 14-5 (5-1) played only five innings in each game, scoring in six of the 10. In game one, led by sophomores Delaney Buckley (Utica, NY), Tina Karaqi (Thornwood, NY) and Alyssa Balfe (Oriskany, NY), the Generals scored in the first, second, third and fifth innings. Buckley finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Karaqi finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Balfe finished 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Also collecting an RBI in game one was freshman Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, NY). Heimbach went 1-for-2 with an RBI and walk. It helped starting pitcher Toni Secreti (Syracuse, NY) get her seventh win of the season, throwing another complete game shutout. Secreti has not allowed a run in her last three appearances, currently third in the nation with four shutouts.

In game two, behind Alyssa LaLonde (Johnstown, NY) who threw her fourth complete game and second shutout of the season, Herkimer piled on the runs in the third and fourth innings. Ashley Sterritt (Accord, NY) hit her nation leading eighth home run of the season, giving the Generals a 3-0 lead. It scored Gina Grant (Niskayuna, NY) and Heimbach who reached on a walk and infield single.

Then in the fourth sixth runs crossed the plate on RBIs from Heimbach, Sterritt, Alexis Capasso (Gloversville, NY), Balfe and Savannah Sergio (Brewster, NY). Heimbach hit a triple, Sterritt hit a double, Capasso hit a triple, Balfe hit a double and Sergio hit a single. In total, the Generals had five hits in the inning, increasing the lead to 9-0.

The Generals continue their overloaded schedule Monday, playing another doubleheader at Jefferson Community College. The Cannoners will host the first game at 3 p.m.
