Softball sweeps unbeaten Vikings

TROY, NY – The Herkimer General Softball team got back on track Thursday afternoon, defeating Hudson Valley Community College 20-5 and 14-6 in a doubleheader hosted by the Vikings.

Herkimer 10-5 (3-1) had 32 combined hits in the two games, seven of them home runs. Sophomore Ashley Sterritt (Accord, NY) led the group with three on the day. Additionally, Hudson Valley saw the Generals go yard back-to-back on separate occasions. Once in each game of the doubleheader.

In game one Sterritt went 4-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs, Sammy Smaldone (Delmar, NY) went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, Caitlin Sanders (Duanesburg, NY) went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, NY) went 2-for-5 with four RBIs, Tina Karaqi (Thornwood, NY) went 2-for-5 with a home run and RBI and Alyssa Balfe (Oriskany, NY) went 2-for-5 with two doubles.

Earning the win in game one was Alyssa LaLonde (Johnstown, NY). LaLonde went 3 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits.

In game two, Herkimer tallied 18 more hits in five innings, scoring nine runs in the final two, increasing a 5-4 lead to 14-3 with the bottom of the fifth still left to play. Smaldone went 4-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBIs, Sterritt went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, Heimbach went 3-for-3 with a home run, triple and two RBIs, Karaqi went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Kayla Bancroft (Fort Ann, NY) went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, Kathryn Dolly (Herkimer, NY) went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Rebekah Kitchen (Delmar, NY) added her second home run of the season.

Starting on the mound was Toni Secreti (Syracuse, NY). Secreti went all five innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits. She also added four strike outs to her totals.

Herkimer’s next game is today (4/11). It will be the team’s second game in a row and fourth by Sunday. On Friday the Generals will travel to Broome to take on the Hornets. The doubleheader starts at 3 p.m.
