Herkimer softball sweeps Clinton

Herkimer, NY – The Herkimer softball team kept up its winning ways this weekend as they took two games from Clinton CC on Sunday afternoon by the scores of 19-0 and 11-1. The Generals got great pitching from starters Alyssa LaLonde and Alexa DiSpirito.

The Generals also used the long ball in Game One and some timely hitting in Game Two to secure the victories. They also used the leather well, playing errorless ball throughout the two contests.

The games were played at Herkimer High School because the lingering winter weather kept the Generals' home field from being ready. However, the Generals are planning to play their games this Tuesday on their own field.

Game One

DiSpirito got the start in the circle and was brilliant. She went five innings and was one out away from a perfect game until the #7 hitter in the lineup broke it up with a seeing-eye single just past the diving, outreached arm of shortstop Tina Karaqi. But that would be all the visiting Cougars would get as DiSpirito sat down the very next batter to end the game. She struck out six across the five frames and gave up only the one hit.

The Generals' offense provided much support as Jessica Patterelli led off the bottom half of the first with a deep solo shot that set the tone for the day. The Generals went on to blast a total of four HR's in the game.

The hitting was led by Samantha Smaldone (3-3, 2B, HR, 4 RBI), Stephanie Siriano (3-3, 3B, HR, 4RBI), Delaney Buckley (3-4, 2B, 3B, RBI) and Courtney Gumprecht (3-3, 2B, RBI). Ashely Sterritt added the other HR, a grand slam in the third that broke the game open. Sterritt finished her day two-for-four with the homer and a double to go along with five RBI's. Tina Karaqi added an RBI triple and a base hit, while Fallon Spriggs contributed a single.
