(Molly Mooore's double in the fourth inning gave Herkimer a 12-0 lead, scoring Alexis Capasso).

HERKIMER, NY – The quest for a national championship began on Tuesday (5/5) for the #1 Herkimer Generals softball team, defeating #8 Jefferson Community College 12-0 at home, advancing to the Region III Championship this coming Friday.

Herkimer (33-7, 12-0) needed five innings in their Region III Semifinal game to collect the team’s 29th consecutive win. Helping the Generals mercy rule the Cannoneers at the plate was freshman Taylor Daniels (Watervliet, NY). The infielder went 2-for-3 with a season-high six runs batted in. Helping Daniels to those totals was two home runs, the first coming in the second inning via a grand slam. It was her fifth home run of the season, finishing the game with six which is tied with Elyssa LeBaron (Corning, NY) for the team lead.

Pitching in the opening round of playoffs for the Generals was Dana Nicoletti (Syracuse, NY), appearing in her 15th game for the Generals. The freshman didn’t disappoint, not allowing an earned run for the third time this season, helping her to a 10th win. Nicoletti also struck out seven Cannoneers, averaging 8.12 per game which is the third best total in the nation.

Up next for the Generals is Monroe Community College. The #5 Tribunes defeated #6 Corning 9-6 on Tuesday (5/5), advancing them to play Herkimer on Friday (5/8) at Genesee Community College, the host for this year’s 2015 Region III Softball Championship. Monroe managed a 16-game win streak this season, but lost to the Generals 8-0 and 7-2 in their regular season meeting. As previously mentioned, the Generals will be riding a 29-game win streak into Friday’s best of three series. Game times are 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
