Secreti salvages series against Hawks

(Kathryn Dolly doubles home Kayla Bancroft in the fifth inning against Mohawk Valley Thursday afternoon).

(Alyssa Balfe went 2-for-3 in game two with two RBIs against the Hawks).

UTICA, NY – After a couple weeks off due to inclement weather, the Herkimer Generals softball team traveled to Mohawk Valley to take on the Hawks Thursday afternoon. It took 10 innings to finish the first game and six to finish the second, with Herkimer losing the first game 2-1 and winning the second game 10-2.

Herkimer 8-5 (1-1) lost their first conference game of the season despite getting a strong outing from sophomore Alyssa LaLonde (Johnstown, NY). LaLonde only allowed two runs on seven hits in 9 2/3 and led 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh before Mohawk Valley tied the game to force extras.

The Hawks got to the starter in the 10th inning after a couple of Generals miscues, winning the game 2-1 despite seeing Herkimer rack up 10 hits on offense. Getting six of them were Sammy Smaldone (Delmar, NY), Delaney Buckley (Utica, NY) and Caitlin Sanders (Duanesburg, NY). Smaldone went 2-for-5 with two singles, Buckley went 2-for-4 with a single and double and Sanders went 2-for-3 with two singles.

Getting the RBI in game one for Herkimer was captain Alyssa Balfe (Oriskany, NY). In the second inning Balfe scored Kathryn Dolly (Herkimer, NY) on a sacrifice.

In game two, Toni Secreti (Syracuse, NY) took the mound. She pitched exceptionally, allowing only two runs on five hits, but also scattered six strike outs, never allowing the Hawks to get in the game despite an early run in the first.

Helping the Generals offense in game two was Courtney Tasco (Rome, NY), Alyssa Balfe, Ashley Sterritt (Accord, NY), Kathryn Dolly and Brittany Ormond (New Paltz, NY). Tasco went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Balfe went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Sterritt went 2-for-4 with a home run and RBI and Dolly went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

In the second Tasco got her two RBIs when she singled home Kayla Bancroft (Fort Ann, NY) and Dolly, capturing the lead back from the Hawks 3-1.

Balfe added to it in the fourth, when an RBI double scored Tasco, making it 4-1.

Two innings later after a Sterritt inside the park home run, RBI singles by Dolly and Balfe scored Bancroft and Dolly to make it 7-1.

In the sixth, the Generals scoring concluded when a Dolly two RBI double scored Alexis Capasso (Gloversville, NY) and Sterritt, then Ormond scored Dolly on an RBI single.

Herkimer’s next doubleheader is tomorrow (4/5). The Generals will host Finger Lakes Community College at Earl Field in Herkimer. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m.
