Walkoff double pushes Generals over Twins

(Sarah Heimbach gives her team their first lead in game one, scoring Alyssa Balfe and Caitlin Sanders).

(Tina Karaqi scores Delaney Buckley in game one to give the Generals an 11-3 lead in the third inning).

HERKIMER, NY – Collecting their fifth series sweep since the 10th, the Herkimer Generals Softball team needed late inning heroics Thursday afternoon at Harmon Field to defeat Columbia-Greene Community College 17-5 and 5-4 in a doubleheader.

Helping Herkimer 17-5 (8-1) collect their 10th consecutive win was Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, NY), Alexis Capasso (Gloversville, NY), Ashley Sterritt (Accord, NY), Gina Grant (Niskayuna, NY), Brittany Ormond (New Paltz, NY) and Sammy Smaldone (Delmar, NY).

Trailing 4-2, Heimbach got things started, getting on base via a single. A Capasso single and Sterritt walk loaded the bases for Grant, who finished the second game 1-for-3 with one RBI. She earned that RBI on a walk, which scored Heimbach, closing the gap to 4-3. The next batter up was Ormond. She reached on an error, scoring Capasso to make it 4-4. Next up was Smaldone. The catcher had gone 1-for-3 at the plate thus far with an RBI, but felt good coming into the game with two home runs against the Twins in their 16-5 win. The sophomore came through, smacking a double which scored Sterritt, helping the Generals win 5-4 in walkoff fashion.

Earning the win in game two was Alyssa LaLonde (Johnstown, NY). She threw another complete game, winning her fifth start this season. In seven innings she allowed four runs, three of them earned, striking out two. The Twins however managed to gather 10 hits.

In game one, hits came in bunches, seeing five players collect two or more RBIs. The Generals scored seven runs in the third inning and six runs in the fourth. In the third Ormond and Smaldone hit back-to-back home runs which gave the team a 10-3 lead. Ormond finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Smaldone finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Also going yard was Rebekah Kitchen (Delmar, NY). The sophomore hit her third home run of the season in the fourth, scoring Tina Karaqi (Thornwood, NY), who went 4-for-4 in game one with four RBIs. It helped score the Generals final run of the game, leading by 13 (16-3). Kitchen finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Rounding out the offensive attack was Heimbach. The freshman went 4-for-4, tying Karaqi with a team-leading four RBIs.

Starting in the first game was Toni Secreti (Syracuse, NY). She collected her ninth win of the season, throwing a complete game six hitter. Secreti added seven strike outs in the game, but also walked four.

The Generals next game is Saturday (4/19). They’ll host Tompkins-Cortland Community College in a doubleheader which is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. The team will try to play their first full game at Herkimer College this season.
