Tribunes no match for Secreti and Ormond

ROCHESTER, NY – Facing the fourth best team in the Region III Saturday didn’t faze the Herkimer Generals softball team, defeating the Tribunes 7-0 and 10-2, increasing their current win streak to 18 games.

Starting game one for the Generals 25-5 (10-1) was Toni Secreti (Syracuse, NY). The sophomore collected her eighth shutout of the season - fourth best in the nation - not allowing a run in her last 22 innings pitched which dates back two weeks. She also struck out 11 batters, her highest total in the regular season.

Behind Secreti, five players knocked in runs for the Generals, scoring seven unanswered runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. They were Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, NY), Sammy Smaldone (Delmar, NY), Delaney Buckley (Utica, NY), Rebekah Kitchen (Delmar, NY) and Alyssa Balfe (Oriskany, NY).

Heimbach finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, raising her average to .562 which is 6th best in the nation. Smaldone finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs as well, hitting her ninth home run of the season which is fourth best in the nation. Buckley finished 1-for-4 with one RBI, Kitchen finished 3-for-4 with one RBI and her third triple of the season and Balfe finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, scoring her 17th run of the season.

In game two, Brittany Ormond (New Paltz, NY) picked up where Secreti left off, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings, helping Herkimer never trail in the doubleheader. In Ormond’s last three starts, the freshman has allowed less than a hit per inning and a total of two runs.

On offense, Heimbach, Ashley Sterritt (Accord, NY), Buckley and Balfe accounted for 10 of the Generals 13 hits, knocking in eight of the 10 runs. Heimbach got her 25th RBI of the season, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Sterritt got her 45th RBI of the season on 3-for-4 at the plate with one double and one triple. Buckley hit her fifth home run of the season, helping her to 19 RBIs on the season, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Balfe hit her second home run and knocked in her 21st RBI, going 1-for-3 with one run scored as well.

Herkimer’s next doubleheader is Sunday (5/4). They’ll travel to Syracuse, NY to take on Onondaga Community College. The Lazers are third in the Region III, one spot behind the Generals. Play between both teams is scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
