Herkimer travels to Monroe, takes two from Tribunes Sunday

ROCHESTER, NY – Getting a go-ahead hit by Georgie Super in game one and contributions from Taylor Daniels and Dana Nicoletti in game two, the #2 Herkimer Generals softball team traveled to play Monroe on Sunday 5/8 and defeated the Tribunes 10-8 and 6-4.

Herkimer (40-5, 13-0) finished the week playing eight games in the matter of four days, hosting one of those doubleheaders at home on Saturday (5/7). The little rest and traveling didn’t faze the Generals however as their depth come through.

In game one, after falling down 4-1 in the first and 7-5 in the fifth, the Generals managed to get the final lead of the game after Super (Poughkeepsie, NY) drove in Paige Crittela (Syracuse, NY) in the eighth, scoring five runs in the final two innings. It helped Dana Nicoletti (Syracuse, NY) to her 15th win of the season, coming in relief of Amy Hart (St. Johnsville, NY) after the sophomore allowed six runs to score in 4 1/3. Nicoletti allowed one earned run in 3 2/3 in one of her few relief appearances this season.

Keeping the team in game one was Elyssa LeBaron (Corning, NY) and Taylor Daniels (Watervliet, NY). Both combined for six runs batted in, watching LeBaron go 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and Daniels go 3-for-5 with four runs batted in. Daniels also hit her 13th home run of the season, tallying four in her last five games played.

In game two, the Generals again found themselves down 2-0 early until Daniels hit her second home run of the series and Nicoletti drove another run in the bottom of the third to give Herkimer a 3-2 lead. Daniels finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and Nicoletti finished 1-for-4 with one RBI. Herkimer never trailed from there, even after the Tribunes scored two runs in the seventh. It helped Jacqueline Gardner (Syracuse, NY) to her sixth win of the season, needing Casey Boltersdorf (Levittown, PA) the final two innings of the game to preserve the win. Boltersdorf allowed two runs to score despite not allowing a hit to get her fourth save of the season. Those four saves are the most in the nation.

Others to contribute offensively in game two were Molly McGuire (Solvay, NY) and Sydney Cimini (Syracuse, NY). Both drove in a run.

On Tuesday (5/10) the softball team will host a regional semifinal game against Columbia-Greene Community College, receiving the #1 overall seed in 2016. They’ll host #8 Columbia-Greene in a one-game playoff at 4 p.m. Last time these to team’s faced off, Herkimer won 15-0 and 10-2.
