HERKIMER, NY – Hosting their fourth consecutive Region III semifinal game on Tuesday (5/10), this time against #8 Columbia-Greene, the #1 Herkimer Generals softball team defeated the Twins 9-0 in five innings to advance to the Region III championship.
Herkimer 41-5 (13-0) had Dana Nicoletti in the circle, and all the sophomore did was allow two hits - one in the first and third innings – facing only 17 batters for her 16th win (16-1) of the season. The right hander also struck out six Twins for her seventh complete game shutout in 17 appearances.
Getting things started in the first inning for the offense was Sydney Cimini (Syracuse, NY). With the bases loaded and two outs, Cimini knocked in Nicoletti and Elyssa LeBaron (Corning, NY) to give the Generals a 2-0 lead. Cimini finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted in.
LeBaron, Taylor Daniels (Watervliet, NY) and Molly McGuire (Solvay, NY) then got in the act in the second. LeBaron singled home Shannon McCann (Horseheads, NY), Daniels sacrificed in Paige Crittela (Syracuse, NY) and McGuire singled home LeBaron and Nicoletti to push it to 6-0. LeBaron finished the game 1-for-2 with one RBI, Daniels finished 1-for-2 with three RBI and McGuire finished 1-for-1 with two RBI.
Driving in the final two runs in the fourth was Daniels and Cimini. Daniels tripled to score LeBaron and Nicoletti while Cimini singled to score Daniels for the ninth run of the contest, shortening the game to five innings due to an eight-run rule after Nicoletti retired the Columbia-Green in order during the top half of the fifth.
With the win, #1 Herkimer now advances to play in the Region III championship at Genesee Community College. They’ll play a best of three series against #4 Monroe Community College. In 2014, the Generals defeated the Tribunes 8-5 and 9-0, not needing a third game to be regional champions. This season, Herkimer has already defeated Monroe 10-8 and 6-4. They’ll look to keep their solid play up this Friday, May 13th when both teams play at Genesee. Game times have yet to be announced.
