Softball wins fifth straight Region 3 Championship

BATAVIA, NY – Playing Monroe CC on Friday (5/13) for a second straight season in the Region 3 ‘A’ Championship at Genesee Community College yielded the same result in 2016 for the Herkimer Generals softball program, a sweep of the Tribunes, this time 9-1 and 6-0 for their fifth consecutive regional championship under Head Coach PJ Anadio.

Herkimer (43-5, 13-0) battled with Monroe in a regular season finale on the road at the beginning of the week, winning the doubleheader by a combined four runs after playing eight games in the matter of four days. Friday was a different story as the team came in rested with two days of preparation after defeating Columbia-Greene 9-0 in a sub-regional playoff game at home. The team scored six runs within the first three innings, putting up a five-spot in the third. Taylor Daniels (Watervliet, NY) singles to score Elyssa LeBaron (Corning, NY), followed by another single by Sydney Cimini (Syracuse, NY) to score Daniels and Arainna Brone (Rochester, NY). Daniels finished with a game-high three runs batted in, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

One RBI behind Daniels was Lindsey Parese (Herkimer, NY). The sophomore collected two extra-base hits, a triple in the third inning and double in the sixth to finish 2-for-4 at the plate.

With the offense collecting 13 hits in the seven inning contest, Dana Nicoletti (Syracuse, NY) recorded her 13th complete game of the season, going six innings and only allowing one run to score off of four hits. It helped the right hander to her 17th win of the season.

In game two - the Generals didn’t manage as many hits - tallying seven, but it was all they needed with starter Casey Boltersdorf (Levittown, PA) holding the Tribunes to three hits in seven innings of work. Boltersdorf collected her 10th complete game of the season, striking out a season-high 11 batters for her 11th. It was Boltersdorf’s fifth shutout in 13 games started this season.

Coming through for the Generals at the plate in game two was Daniels and Brone. The team scored three runs in the fourth inning to blow it open (5-0). Daniels hits a two-run single and Brone drove in one with a triple. It helped Daniels collect three more runs batted in and Brone collect one. Daniels finished the doubleheader with six runs batted in against the Tribunes, the same day she earned Region 3 Athlete of the Year.

Others to collect runs batted in during the second game were LeBaron and Cimini. LeBaron went 1-for-1 and Cimini went 1-for-3 at the plate.

With the win, the Generals advance to the NJCAA DIII Softball World Series which will again be hosted at McQuillan Sports Complex in Rochester, MN. The team has finished in second place the past two seasons, losing to Rock Valley after defeating the Golden Eagles in 2013 for its first ever national championship title. Games are slated to begin Thursday, May 19th.
