Generals playing well, sweep doubleheader

Myrtle Beach, SC – Wednesday was another good day for the Generals as they won their third and fourth games in the Snowbird Softball festival. First they defeated Onondaga CC 7-3. Next they downed D-II Mercer County (NJ) CC 5-4.

Game One

Onondaga scratched a run in the first inning, but the Generals came right back with a manufactured run in the home half of the inning. Jessica Patterelli was hit by a pitch and stole second to lead off that frame.

The Lazers scored again in the second, but the pitching of Toni Secreti and solid defense behind her held OCC in check the rest of the way. Secreti pitched all seven innings. Head Coach PJ Anadio had praise for freshman Secreti, noting that she pitched well in seven innings against D-III powerhouse Brookdale on Tuesday, then came back with another quality outing on Wednesday. "Toni is starting to pitch the way we think she can pitch," added Anadio.

The Generals had one of their best offensive outings so far, stroking 10 hits in their six offensive innings. Stephanie Siriano seems to be getting back up to her usual high level of hitting. She drove in four runs and hit two homers against OCC. One of her blasts landed on top of a building beyond the left field fence and was estimated to be a 230' shot.

Tina Karaqi also hit a laser-shot homer against the Lazers. Said Anadio, "The coaching staff is very happy with Tina's hitting. She's becoming a gamer."

Smooth-hitting Sammy Smaldone had a double, and Alyssa Balfe went two-for-three against OCC.

Onondaga   120 000 0    3-3-1

Herkimer     111 031 -   7-10-1    Winning Pitcher:  Secreti

Game Two

Division-II Mercer CCC was the home team. Herkimer batted first and put two runs on the board. Mercer showed the Generals some very good pitching, and HCCC could only hit safely four times, but they made those hits count.

Tina Karaqi again sent a shot over the fence. Sammy Smaldone and third baseman Ashley Sterritt added their first dingers of the season. Karaqi also doubled. Karaqi's HR was a short-swing shot to left. Smaldone's went over the left-center fence, and Sterritt's blast cleared the right-center fence.

Alexa DiSpirito was in the circle for the Generals. She earned the win and raised her record to 2-0 in the young season.

Herkimer       201 200 0    5-4-2

Mercer      120 010 0    4-5-1

The Generals will close out their Snowbird week with two games on Thursday. They will meet Alfred State College at 9:00 a.m. and Mohawk Valley at 11:00 a.m.
