Sweet southern swing for softball team

Myrtle Beach, SC – The Generals won both games in their final day of Snowbird Softball play. HCCC downed the Pioneers of Alfred State 11-3 in the 9:00 a.m. Thursday game and won 15-4 over Mohawk Valley in the late-morning matchup. The Generals won six of their seven games in the Snowbird festival, forging a very strong start to their 2013 campaign.

Two Herkimer hurlers saw their first pitching duty of the season. Jessica Patterelli and Alyssa LaLonde started the two games in the circle. Both earned wins, and Alexa Dispirito closed out the second contest.

Both games were shortened to five innings by the run rule.

Game One

The blue and gold squad from Alfred State batted first. Good pitching by Jess Patterelli and Herkimer's sound defense behind her held the Pioneers scoreless into the fourth inning. Meanwhile, the Herkimer hitters were ready and were producing.

HCCC scored six runs before a Pioneer crossed the plate. Then the Generals drove five runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Eight Herkimer batters keyed the attack.

Savannah Sergio led off, had two hits, and drove in a run. Stephanie Siriano and Delaney Buckley both had doubles and batted in a run. Tina Karaqi doubled in two runs in the first inning.

Alyssa Balfe went two for three at the plate and batted in a run. Ashley Sterritt had a three-for-three day, with two doubles and a home run. Rebekah Kitchen stroked an RBI double. Kathryn Dolly had a base hit.

The Generals answered in grand fashion with patience at the plate and timely hitting by Delaney Buckley and Rebekah Kitchen. Buckley doubled and Kitchen stroked a two-RBI single. The game was knotted 4-4 at the end of the first.

Herkimer took charge of the game in the bottom of the second. Jess Patterelli hit her way on base. Steph Siriano blasted a deep home run – her third Snowbird homer – driving in two runs.

Alyssa LaLonde made her collegiate debut in the circle. She shut the Hawks down in the second, third, and fourth innings, earning the win. Alexa DiSpirito came on to close out the game.

Several Generals had strong games in the batter's box. Patterelli went three for four with two RBI. Buckley also went three for four and doubled twice.
