Tennis falls in first match to Vikings
TROY, NY – Competing in their first match of the season Saturday (9/12) at home, the Herkimer Generals women’s tennis team lost to Hudson Valley 6-0.
Herkimer (0-1, 0-1) had their best showing against the Vikings in third and fourth singles. Maxine Grogan (Herkimer, NY) and Meghan Whitemoyer (Blossvale, NY) took 12 sets combined, six each, with Grogan losing to Jordyn Applebaum 7-5, 6-1 and Whitmoyer losing to Natalie Haviland 6-3, 6-3.
Kirin Kubayashi (Chiba, Japan) and Jordan Mercer (Oneida, NY) paired for the only doubles match for Herkimer with second doubles suspended due to weather. Both took one set from Hudson Vally, losing to Danielle Behunin and Kathleen Mai 8-1.
The Generals next match is Tuesday (9/15), hosting conference rival Mohawk Valley Community College. Both team’s will be looking for their first win of the season 4 p.m. at East Herkimer Sports Complex.
