Owen Capria Brings Home First-Ever SUNY Esports Championship to Herkimer
In a nail-biting showdown that went the distance, Herkimer College's Owen Capria clinched the SUNY National Championship in Street Fighter 6 with a hard-fought 4-3 win over SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon.
Capria became the first member of the Herkimer Esports program to claim an individual SUNY championship.
The SUNY Esports League includes SUNY colleges and universities all across New York State, with more than 2,000 student players who compete across the State University of New York
Capria, known for his fast reflexes and sharp game sense, kept his cool under pressure. The match had everything—momentum swings, tense standoffs, and high-stakes decisions—but it was Capria's timing in the clutch that made the difference. He took the first blow, trailing 0-1 in the best of three series, but quickly bounced back with two straight wins before SUNY Canton tied the match at two with the decisive game left to play.
With the score tied at 2-2, both players went back-and-forth, first Capria finished going up 3-2, before SUNY Canton answered with a counter-attack. With the championship on the line, Capria landed a level 3 super move which dishes out its damage in a cinematic cutscene to finish the fight and bring the championship back to Herkimer.
The win capped a standout season for Capria, who's quickly become one of the top names in collegiate esports. He went 11-2 in SUNY Esports competition in Street Fighter VI. Both of his regular season losses came at the hands of GreyFox from SUNY Canton, but Capria avenged both losses on the biggest stage.
"Owen is the epitome of what an esports athlete should be," said Herkimer College Esports Head Coach Josh Lanza. "He began his collegiate Street Fighter 6 career as a complete novice, starting in the lowest ranking in the game of "Rookie". In just four semesters, through sheer grit, determination and countless hours of practice, Owen achieved the rank of "Master" and has brought home a SUNY Championship taking down some incredibly talented opponents along the way."
Owen now turns his attention to the Street Fighter VI NJCAAE National Championship game. He will be competing against Northeastern State Junior College on Thursday, April 24th at 6:00 PM. You can catch all the action on Twitch at www.twitch.tv/herkimer_generals_esports
"To say I am proud of Owen and will miss him dearly would be a massive understatement," added Lanza. "Words cannot express how much his achievements have meant to this team and this school. I wish him well in his future endeavors. Stories of his climb to the top will be told for years to come."
