Martinez comes alive against Stingers

FLORENCE, SC – The Herkimer Generals baseball team continued their spring trip, splitting games with Division I Florence-Darlington yesterday, losing the first game 6-0, but winning the second game 5-3.
Herkimer (5-1) allowed the stingers to jump up on them early in the first game, scoring four runs in the first two innings off of Denis Lyman (Kingston, NY). A solo home run in the third, followed by another run in the fifth extended the lead to 6-0 for a final.
The second game was a different story for the Generals, scoring the first two runs of the game on Brandon Martinez's (River Edge, NJ) first collegiate home run in the first inning. Martinez was at it again in the third, doubling home another run against Florence-Darlington, extending to the lead to 3-0. John Boland (Rhinebeck, NY) added two more runs with an RBI double later in the inning, giving Herkimer a 5-0 lead. Martinez finished the second game going 2-for-3 with a home run, double, stolen base and three RBIs.
Nick Burch (Salem, NY) started the second game, allowing two unearned run in five innings, which paved the way for Alexander Lynch (Newport, NY) to get his second save this season. Lynch worked two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk. The Generals split the series with the stingers, winning 5-3.
The Generals next game is today (3/20) against Brunswick Community College. The Generals will play the Dolphins on their field at 1 p.m.
