Late inning struggles gives baseball first loss of season
LAKE MYRTLE, FL – Giving up seven runs to Rutgers-Camden JV squad on Monday (3/16), the Herkimer Generals baseball team got their first loss of the season, losing to the Raptors 12-11.
Herkimer (6-1) had another solid start with Thomas Carola (Hicksville, NY) on the mound, allowing five runs - one of them earned - on one hit, three walks and three strike outs. In the freshman's first start after getting a save against Century College in their first win of the season, the righty was set up for the win despite five errors from the Generals defense.
Getting the loss was Kohei Otsuka (Tokyo, Japan). The reliever didn't record an out in the seventh, allowing six earned runs on two hits and three walks. Christian Malave (Milford, CT) had to come in and record the final three outs, allowing one unearned run on one hit and one walk.
Despite Herkimer's trouble on the mound late, the offense still scored 11 runs. Helping the team to those totals were Michael Fancher (Gloversville, NY), Matt Lichtman (Smithtown, NY), Gage Lanning (Central Square, NY) and Jake Rouse (Milford, CT). Fancher had three RBI, going 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored. Lichtman, Lanning and Rouse each collected one RBI in the game with Lichtman going 1-for-4, Lanning going 2-for-3 and Rouse going 1-for-3.
The Generals next game is Tuesday (3/17). It will be the team's eighth game in four days. Game time is scheduled for 10:30 a.m
