HUDSON, NY – Playing their 20th consecutive game against a conference opponent Sunday (5/3), the Herkimer Generals baseball team remained undefeated – to the tune of 27 consecutive wins – defeating Columbia-Greene Community College 8-1 and 12-1.
Herkimer (35-3, 23-1) racked up 11 hits in game one and 13 in game two, helping them outscore the Twins 47-to-5 in their weekend series. Collecting multiple runs batted in on Sunday was Jake Rouse (Milford, CT), Tyler Phillips (Hancock, NY) and Matt Lichtman (Smithtown, NY). Rouse led the group with six RBI on the day, on a tear as of late, hitting two home runs over the weekend which helped the freshman to a season-high four RBI in game two on Sunday. Phillips had two RBI in game one, going 2-for-4 at the plate with eight runs batted in for the Generals in his last six games. Joining Phillips with two was Lichtman. The infielder swung a hot bat over the weekend, collecting five hits and seven RBI against the Twins in four games.
Pitching in the Sunday doubleheader was Joey Butler (Ballston Lake, NY) and Joe DeSarro (Frankfort, NY). Both freshman only allowed one earned run against Columbia-Greene, combing for 11 innings pitched. It helped each to their first win of the season, racking up 12 strikeouts together.
Coming in relief of Herkimer's starters were Mark Giallanzo (Oneonta, NY) and Marcus Failing (Fort Plain, NY). Neither player allowed a run to score in three innings of work.
The Generals finish their regular season with two doubleheaders against conference rival Mohawk Valley Community College. On Tuesday (5/5), the Hawks will play in Herkimer at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. On Wednesday (5/6), the Generals will travel. Mohawk Valley is currently 19-18 on the season.
