HERKIMER, NY – After collecting their 13th consecutive win against the conference on Thursday (4/20), the #10 Herkimer Generals baseball team needed a couple key hits to make it 14, defeating Schenectady County 10-0 and 11-7 at home in a doubleheader.
In game one, the Generals (20-8, 15-1) made quick work of the Royals, shortening the game to five innings due to a 10-run rule. It helped started Jake Conroy (Kirkwood, NY) to his third win of the season, going all five innings for the complete game, only allowing three hits for the shutout. The freshman has not allowed a run in his last three appearances, spanning 11 total innings.
Helping the team offensively in game one was John Novenche (Clifton Park, NY), Gage Lanning (Central Square, NY) and Christian Malave (Milford, CT). Each collected multiple runs batted in, and Novenche and Lanning both went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate. Novenche led the team with three RBI, followed by two form both Lanning and Malave. Novenche now has 19 RBI, Lanning has 34 and Malave has 27 on the season.
As mentioned previously, game two wasn't as easy, needing three pitchers to get through the seven inning contest. Chris Henry (Yorktown Heights, NY) got the start and lasted 2 1/3 before Joseph Gagliano (Wet Milford, NJ) had to come in relief after Henry allowed five earned runs in his appearance. The offense eventually got Gagliano a no decision as well after they tied it up at 5-5 and 7-7 in the third and fifth innings. Dan Nuzzi (Burnt Hills, NY) was the final relief pitcher used, and the sophomore didn't allow a run in his 2 1/3 innings pitching, eventually getting his third win of the season (3-0) after the offense scored four runs in the sixth inning. The right-hander has yet to allow a run to score against him this season through 11 innings. He's also struck out 19 batters in his six appearances.
With Nuzzi holding the Royals at bay in the final two innings, both Malave and Brandon Hubbard (Potomac, MD) got big hits in the sixth to give the Generals a 11-7 lead after leading briefly in the first when Novenche hit his second home run of the season. Both hitters drove in two runs each, back-to-back, finishing the game with two RBI each. Lanning was the only other General to get two runs batted in, finishing game two 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Herkimer will travel on Saturday (4/23) to face Mohawk Valley in another doubleheader. The Hawks are 4-18 overall, losing their last four games to Hudson Valley. The game on Saturday will be played at Donovan Stadium in Utica, NY. Game times are 12 and 2 p.m.
