The Herkimer Generals baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader at Fulton-Montgomery Community College, taking Game 1 with a dominant 15-1 win before falling in a hard-fought 4-3 extra-inning loss in Game 2.
Game 1: Madrid, Sato Power Offensive Surge
Jaden Madrid sparked Herkimer's offense in the opener, collecting three hits and scoring five runs in a 15-1 blowout. The sophomore second baseman singled in the first, fourth, and fifth innings and stole two bases, setting the tone for an aggressive day on the bases. Herkimer swiped three in total.
The Generals got on the board early after a Shiryu Sato RBI single in the first. They padded the lead in the second behind a walk from Jacob Severson and another RBI knock from Sato. A monster sixth inning sealed it, with Herkimer plating seven runs. Hugo Kohnhorst drilled a solo homer, Sato added an RBI walk, and Marvin Hill capped it with a three-run double.
Sato finished with four RBIs, going 2-for-3 with two walks. Kohnhorst, Severson, and Madrid each had multi-hit games, while Hill drove in three.
On the mound, Jace VanValkenburg improved to 2-0, allowing just one run over 4.1 innings with four strikeouts. Brendan Rusnack handled the final 1.2 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out two.
Game 2: Walk-Off Error Sinks Herkimer in Extras
Game 2 saw the Generals come up just short in a 4-3 loss that ended on a walk-off error in the bottom of the eighth. Despite out-hitting the Raiders 8-6, Herkimer couldn't overcome early miscues and missed opportunities.
Fulton-Montgomery jumped out with two runs in the first and added another in the second. Herkimer chipped away, with Kyle Kristel leading the charge with two hits and an RBI. Theo Kanegae and Sato also drove in runs as the Generals tied the game 3-3 in the seventh.
Reliever Evan Staroba was sharp, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. David Denten took the loss, surrendering three early runs (one earned) over 1.2 innings.
The split moves Herkimer to 11-4 (3-1 Region III). The Generals return home Tuesday to host SUNY Broome at 2:00 p.m.
