McGhee's 20 Points Leads Herkimer to Victory Over Corning
The Herkimer College Generals outlasted Corning Community College on Sunday, to claim an 85-73 victory in a Region III matchup. The win marked another strong performance for the Generals as they dominated the boards and capitalized on their free-throw opportunities.
Herkimer took an early lead in the first half, heading into halftime with a 36-29 advantage. The Generals maintained their momentum in the second half, outscoring Corning 49-44 to secure the victory. The team's offensive efficiency shone through as they converted 43.1% of their field goal attempts and an impressive 83.9% from the free-throw line.
Sophomore forward Jayson McGhee (New Rochelle. NY) led the Generals with a stellar all-around performance, contributing a game-high 20 points on 6-for-11 shooting while adding six rebounds and three assists. Freshman Kenny Freeman (Rochester, NY) added 16 points, going 5-for-7 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Nehemiah Yisrael (Brooklyn, NY) provided a spark off the bench with 12 points and eight rebounds, bolstering Herkimer's inside presence.
The Generals' dominance on the boards was a key factor, as they outrebounded Corning 38-28. Sophomore Oladele Oladitan (Staten Island, NY) led the effort on the glass, grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with nine points and nine assists, narrowly missing a triple-double.
Despite the loss, Corning Community College put up a fight. DeCoursey Corley paced the Red Barons with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Siyani Arthur added 14 points. Corning shot 47.5% from the field but struggled from beyond the arc, connecting on just 30.4% of their three-point attempts.
Herkimer's defense also played a critical role in the victory, forcing 15 turnovers and recording 10 steals. The Generals' balanced attack and ability to capitalize on Corning's mistakes ultimately sealed the win.
