Cardona's Career Day Leads Generals Over Division II SUNY Sullivan
In a commanding display of teamwork and efficiency, the Herkimer Generals routed the SUNY Sullivan Generals 99-54 in a road game on Thursday. The Generals, firing on all cylinders, surged to a 44-35 halftime lead before unleashing a relentless 55-point second-half performance to secure the decisive victory.
Balanced Scoring Leads the Way
The Generals boasted a well-rounded offensive attack, with four players scoring in double figures. Freshman Xavier Cardona (Staten Island, NY) led the charge with 19 points on a near-flawless 6-for-7 shooting from the field, including two three-pointers and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Freshman Kenny Freeman (Rochester, NY) anchored the interior, posting a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Jayden Norris (St. Louis, MO) added 14 points, while sophomore Jayson McGhee (New Rochelle, NY) contributed 15 points, connecting on three shots from beyond the arc.
Dominance on Both Ends
Herkimer dominated the boards, out-rebounding Sullivan 47-20, and converted on 57.8% of their field goal attempts. Their defensive intensity forced Sullivan into 27.4% shooting from the floor and limited their three-point success to just 23.1%. The Generals' active hands resulted in nine steals and four blocks, further stifling Sullivan's offensive efforts.
Sullivan's Bright Spot
Erik Jarecki was a lone bright spot for Sullivan, scoring a game-high 22 points, including three triples. Christian Brown chipped in with 11 points, but the team struggled to find consistency, turning the ball over 14 times against Herkimer's swarming defense.
Key Stats and Teamwork
Herkimer's unselfish play was evident with 22 team assists, led by Jessie Kilian and AJ Burnett, who combined for nine dimes. Their bench provided a spark as well, with Quavir Coleman adding 12 points and Cardona leading the reserves.
