Head Coach: John Campagna
Cross Country & Track and Field | 5th Season
John Campagna took over as head coach of the Herkimer College cross country and track and field programs in February 2022, bringing decades of coaching experience and a student-first mindset to the role. A longtime presence at Herkimer, Campagna previously served as head coach for the women’s basketball and cross country teams and has led multiple high school programs across Central New York.
Campagna’s coaching philosophy blends physical and mental training, helping athletes set and achieve meaningful personal goals. He encourages his student-athletes to “choose their path” and actively supports them in reaching their potential both on and off the course.
Under his leadership, Herkimer’s track and cross country athletes have earned national titles, All-American honors, and consistent regional recognition:
Track & Field Standouts:
• Amelia Bowman-McCoy (2024) – NJCAA 3000M Steeplechase National Champion; Region III Champion in 5000M and 4x400 Relay
• Alexis Heath (2024) – Region III Female Track Athlete of the Year; NJCAA 1500M National Runner-up; Region III Champion in 800M, 1500M, and 4x400 Relay
• Avion Harris (2022) – NJCAA 1500M National Champion and All-American; 3rd place in 800M Nationals
• Ja’Nia Ray (2022) – NJCAA All-American, 100M Hurdles
• Jynnae Stevens (2022) – NJCAA All-American, 200M
• Notorious Gue (2022) – NJCAA All-American, Triple Jump
Cross Country Standouts:
• Amelia Bowman-McCoy – 2023 Region III Champion; two-time 1st Team All-Region
• Michael Green – Mountain Valley Conference Champion; 1st Team All-Region
• Donnell Davis, Avion Harris, Allen Booth, Alexis Heath – All earned 1st Team All-Region honors
Beyond coaching, Campagna has played a critical role in supporting Herkimer’s student-athletes academically for over 30 years. As a full-time academic support specialist, he assists with tutoring, course scheduling, and eligibility guidance, helping athletes navigate college life and stay on track toward graduation.
A lifelong resident of Herkimer, NY, Campagna continues to make an impact in his hometown, where he lives with his daughter Madison and son Johnny.
