Herkimer Women's Basketball fell victim to an upset on Wednesday night, as Mountain Valley Conference rival Hudson Valley knocked off the #15 nationally ranked Generals 56-51.
Herkimer trailed at the end of the first quarter 16-10, but came back strong in the second period behind hot shooting from Freshman guard Jordan Bellinger (Oneonta, NY), who hit two threes in the period to give Herkimer a 28-26 lead at the half. Starting the second half, Herkimer came out strong behind an early three from Sophomore guard Angelina Deitz (Schnectady, NY), but hot shooting from Hudson Valley allowed them to tie to going into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Herkimer led by three 46-43 following a layup from Sophomore guard Mariah Freeman (Greece, NY), but Hudson went on a run to take the lead with two minutes left, one they wouldn't relinquish. Down five, Bellinger knocked down her fourth three-pointer of the game to draw Herkimer within two, but couldn't overtake the Vikings.
Herkimer struggled shooting all night, finishing a mere 27%, and shot 7-29 from behind the arc. Hudson Valley on the other-hand went 5-10 from three, and shot nearly 40%. Herkimer scoring was led by Freshman guard Nevaeh Spencer (Bronx, NY), 20 pts, 6 assists, 6 steals. Bellinger added 12 pts, Deitz finished with 8, and Freshman center Junel Beaubrun snagged 15 rebounds.
The Generals return to the court on Saturday as they make the trip to the Community College of Rhode Island, the current #4 team in the country. They will then play Northern Essex on Sunday.
