On Wednesday night, the Herkimer Women's Basketball team traveled to Rochester to take on undefeated Region 3 Division 2 opponent Monroe Community College, and fell 69-63 in a hard fought contest.
The Generals are in the midst of a gauntlet schedule, but faced the challenge head on. Herkimer was led in scoring by Freshmen Amiya Carter (Newark, NJ) and Molly Rifanburg (Edmeston, NY), both coming off the bench. Herkimer started off the game very sluggish, turning the ball over more than usual, versus a relentless press from the Tribunes of Monroe. The opposition jumped out to an early lead, but Herkimer closed the quarter on a 10-3 run to lead at the end of the first quarter.
Entering the second quarter, Herkimer relied on its unorthodox zone, to force Monroe into uncomfortable shots, a theme throughout. Monroe would only shoot 3-21 from behind the arc, for the game. Herkimer held a four point lead late in the half, but back-to-back offensive charge calls against the Generals allowed Monroe to carve into the lead and narrow it to 2 points at the break.
In the second half, Monroe came out hot, scoring off turnovers and fast break leak outs to move the lead to as much as 12 points in the 4th quarter. However, great defense and timely shots from Rifanburg and Jordan Bellinger (Oneonta, NY), allowed Herkimer to get within 3, before Monroe hit key foul shots extending the deficit to six points in the end.
Freshman Nevaeh Spencer (Brooklyn, NY), had another stat stuffing performance with 8 points, 9 assts, and 8 rebounds. Brin Whiteman (Cherry Valley, NY), had her biggest collegiate game with 8 points, including two three-pointers.
Herkimer returns to the floor to take on Number 5 nationally ranked Jefferson Community College on Friday evening at 5 p.m.
