On Tuesday night, the Herkimer Women's Basketball team returned to the court for the first time this semester as they traveled to Division 2 powerhouse SUNY Niagara, coming up short 88-61.
Niagara came out hot in the first quarter, racing out to a 17-8 run, taking advantage of their advantage inside, and capitalizing on early mistakes by the Generals. The second quarter they were able to expand their lead, as Niagara pulled down 18 offensive rebounds in the first half, compared to 15 total rebounds for Herkimer.
In the 3rd quarter though, Herkimer's legs were back and the scoring matched the energy. Led by Sophomore Angelina Deitz (Schnectady, NY) and Freshman Amiya Carter (Newark, NJ), Herkimer put up 30 points in the quarter. Deitz went 3-4 from behind the arc to hype up the team, and Carter would tally 15 points in the 3rd, including a couple of and 1 opportunities. Herkimer would shoot 75% from the floor, but Niagara would match them with 29 points of their own and shot 61%.
In the fourth, Niagara and Herkimer would play even for the majority of the quarter, up until the last couple minutes. Freshman Point Guard Nevaeh Spencer (Brooklyn, NY), filled the box score with 8 pts, 6 reb, and 5 assists for the Generals.
Herkimer returns to the court on Saturday, January 10 hosting Region 15's Hostos Community College.
