The Herkimer Women's Basketball squad earned a hard-fought and big-time win over Region 3 Division 2 opponent Jamestown on Sunday afternoon. In what proved to be a back and forth matchup, Herkimer prevailed on a foul shot with 4 seconds left by Sophomore Mariah Freeman (Rochester, NY).
In the opening quarter, Herkimer got down early, 10-3 on hot three point shooting from Jamestown. Herkimer would answer each time Jamestown tried to pull away, actually holding a 20-19 lead after the first quarter, led by Sophomore Angelina Deitz (Schnectady, NY), and Freshman Brin Whiteman (Cherry Valley, NY). In the second, Herkimer struggled to put the ball through the net, but fought hard on the defensive end to keep them in it. Jamestown would get hot again behind the arc, as they made 7 three-pointers in the first half.
In the 3rd quarter, Herkimer scored early and often, tallying 23 points to Jamestown 16 to draw within one. Freshman Amiya Carter (Newark, NJ), led the Generals offensive spurt with 8 points in the quarter on 4 impactful drives to the rim. In the fourth, Herkimer would push even more, connecting on three-pointers from Deitz, Whiteman, and Freshman Nevaeh Spencer (Brooklyn, NY). The Generals would hold a slim four point led, as Jamestown went 8-9 from the foul line in the 4th quarter to stay tight.
Following a couple missed foul shots by Herkimer, Jamestown advanced the ball and hit a baseline jumper with 8 seconds remaining to tie the game, but fouled Freeman who made 1 of 2 to capture the win.
With the win, Herkimer improved to 8-7 on the year, and will now enter Region 3 competition next Saturday and Sunday as they welcome Genesee and Corning to their home floor.
